Why Zip Codes and City Lists don’t work for a Waste Hauler’s Online Signup Solution
TrashBolt’s Online Signup System is the waste industry’s first solution allowing a hauler’s new customers to sign up for service. Since 2018, we’ve seen copycat competitors come and go. We’ve even seen some haulers try to duplicate what we built. But, in both cases, they’ve come up short. Why? Why basing a signup system on Zip Codes doesn’t work:
Below is an actual map of a waste hauler in Minneapolis, MN. The colored areas (polygons) are where the hauler services, the open (uncolored) areas are where the hauler doesn’t service, and the zip codes are the boxes on top of the service polygons. The hauler does not service the city of Bloomington (it’s run by the city). If a system is based on zip codes, it would accept a customer in 55345 and within the city limits of Bloomington, an unserviceable customer. The same is true for 55433, and 55410.
Basing an online signup system on zip codes could lead to a cart/dumpster being delivered to an unserviceable address, a very expensive mistake. Or, worse, having to call up a customer you can’t service, refund their money, wasting your and their time, and tarnishing your hard earned reputation.
Why basing an online signup system on a List of Cities doesn’t work:
Many addresses are in cities where you cannot service every address. For example, consider an HOA where another hauler services those customers. Sure, it’s within the city limits, but you can’t service it. Each circled area (below) represents an area that is within a city, has the city name in the address, but is unserviceable. So, basing your online signup capabilities on a city list will not work; it’s simply not accurate enough.
For accuracy, your online signup system must be Polygon-Based:

- Anything and Everything associated with the Service Address that you want to show or collect at the point of sale.
